With its origins dating back to the early 1900s, AMC theatres knows how to manage the movie business. Beginning in a grand tent much like that of a circus, three brothers invited anyone and everyone to see their melodramatic entertainment in Midwest. The family moved to Missouri where they purchased a theatre in 1920. From this theatre grew a company that now has 307 theatres and a total of 4,610 screens and is the second largest movie theater chain in North America. As time rolled on however, times ran slow and only one movie was being shown at a time in a theatre. Finally, there was an idea – one that would change the cinema industry forever. Why not split the larger theatre into smaller auditoriums and allow for more than one movie at a time? It was genius. Not only would this reduce congestion, but the revenue could almost double.

Once this idea became a reality in 1963, the Parkway Twin (located in south Kansas City, Missouri) became “the first originally designed multiplex theatre in the world” – a move that ever since then has left a lasting impression on how we view movies today. This multi-screened theatre chain continued to grow and spread, and by 1968 it had expanded nationwide. It became incorporated as American Multi-Cinema, Inc. (AMC) and has since kept the name. Today AMC has locations around the world in Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Spain. AMC has also innovated several first of their kinds and included them in their theatres, for example, stadium seating and the armchair cup holder – advancements that we appreciate today and look forward to every time we visit a movie theatre.
