Rucker was actually the lead singer and rhythm guitarist for the band called Hootie and the Blowfish which is where he fist got his wind of fame. It was just in 2008 that Rucker decided to go solo and he went for a career in country music. Although in 2002 Rucker recorded his first solo album called Back to Then with Hidden Beach Records and then in 2008 he recorded Learn to Live with Capital Records. His first three singles off Learn to Live have all hit the Number One spot on the U.S. Hot Country Songs chart which include “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It”, “It Won’t Be Like This For Long”, and “Alright”. Then his single called “History in the Making” made the number three spot and the album overall is certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. Darius Rucker was born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina. Rucker’s mother raised him and five other siblings by herself, he has three sisters and two brothers. He said his father was “never around” and he only saw him on Sundays before church. His father was in a gospel band called The Rolling Stones. Darius Rucker had been the lead singer for Hootie and the Blowfish since they formed back in 1986, the band members met while attending the University of South Carolina. When Rucker was a part of Hootie and the Blowfish they recorded five studio albums which consist of Cracked Rear View, Fairweather Johnson, Musical Chairs, Hootie and the Blowfish, and Looking for Lucky. Rucker actually became known as just “Hootie” since he was the front leading man of the band. He first started recording an R&B solo album in 2001 and called it The Return of Mongo Slade, but this was not released due to the recording company. There were some changes to the album and Hidden Beach Recordings released the album as Back to Then in 2002.

In 2005, Rucker appeared in a commercial for Burger King as a singing cowboy advertising their TenderCrisp Bacon Cheddar Ranch sandwich. He sang a song to the jingle tune of “Big Rock Candy Mountain”. Rucker first signed with Capitol Records in 2008 and came out with his first country album. His first single off his Learn to Live album was a hit right away called “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It”, Rucker co-wrote this song with Clay Mills. The song debuted as number 51 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. The single “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It” also made Rucker the first African American singer to reach the top 20 on country charts, it has not been done since Charley Pride in 1988. The next single from the album was “It Won’t Be Like This For Long” which stayed at the top of the charts for three weeks straight. And the single called “Alright” was Rucker’s third single to hit the number one spot on the charts. Rucker went to many country stations all over the United States and let them know he realized he was the “New kid on the block” and the program director from the Tampa, Florida radio station called WQYK-FM thought he would be someone with entitlement but instead he was the one who engaged others. When Darius found out about his first single becoming Number one, he cried.
