Anyone who really likes American country from back in the old days would really love Kenny Rogers. His actual name is Kenneth Ray Rogers “Kenny” is short for Kenneth, he was born on August 21, 1938. Kenny Rogers became known as an American country music singer songwriter, photographer, record producer, actor, and entrepreneur. He has had 70 hit singles make it to the top of many different music charts of many different genres. All of these hit singles were on the charts for over 442 weeks in the United States. Sales slowed down quite a bit so Rogers joined a jazz band called The Bobby Doyle Trio. With this band he got many gigs in clubs as well as recorded with Columbia Records. In 1965 the trio broke up and in 1966 Rogers recorded for Mercury Records, there he recorded a song called “Here’s That Rainy Day” but that song did not make a hit. In the meantime Rogers worked with a producer, writer, and session musician Mickey Gilley and Eddy Arnold. In 1966 Rogers joined another group called New Christy Minstrels as a singer and a double bass player. That group was not working out for him so Rogers and a few other members left the band to form their own group called The First Edition in 1967. The band later renamed to Kenny Rogers and The First Edition. The new band racked up the hits on both the pop and country charts with songs such as “Something’s Burning”, “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love To Town”, “Reuben James”, “and Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)”. When Kenny Rogers was in his First Edition days he was labeled as the hippie type, he had long brown hair, an earring, and he always wore pink sunglasses. The First Edition group split up in 1976 and Rogers went solo again. This is when he acquired a more middle of the road type of sound and his solo career took off the ground.
