Anyone who is a football fanatic and likes to follow a certain team throughout the season, the Pittsburg Steelers is the way to go. They have what they call a Tradition of Excellence and they are the fifth oldest franchise in the NFL. The Steelers were initially founded on July 8, 1933 by a man named Arthur Joseph Rooney. The original name of the football team back when they were founded was the Pittsburg Pirates and they were in the Eastern Division of the 10-team NFL. There were four other teams in the NFL at that time and that includes the Chicago (Arizona) Cardinals, Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, and New York Giants. The Pittsburg Steelers have won six Super Bowls which include Super Bowl IX, Super Bowl X, Super Bowl XIII, Super Bowl XIV, Super Bowl XL, and Super Bowl XLIII.
The team has even made it to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Back when the team had the name of the Pittsburg Pirates they had a streak of really bad luck, that all changed when they hired Chuck Noll as the new coach in 1969. The best move Chuck Noll made was his draft selections, he took “Mean” Joe Greene in 1969, Terry Bradshaw and Mel Blount in 1970, Franco Harris in 1972, and then in 1974 he chose Lynn Swann, Jack Lambert, John Stallworth, and Mike Webster. All of these draft selections that Noll made were Hall of Famers. The 1974 season was without a doubt the Pittsburg Steelers best year ever. Chuck Noll retired in 1992 his successor was Bill Cowher who was the Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator. Bill Cowher was also a native of the Pittsburg suburb called Crafton. During the first six seasons Bill Cowher had with the Steelers, he led them to the playoffs each time. Cowher coached the Steelers for a total of 15 seasons and he took them to the playoffs 10 of those 15 seasons all together.
On January 22, 2007 Mike Tomlin was announced the new head coach of the Steelers due to Cowher resigning his position. Art Rooney II, Dan Rooney, and Kevin Colbert were called the three man committee who interviewed a few guys for the position such as Ken Whisenhunt the Offensive Coordinator, offensive line coach Russ Grimm, Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin, Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, and former defensive coordinator Chan Gailey. Mike Tomlin was the chosen one for the head coach position, he was also awarded the 2008 Motorola Coach of the year. When it comes to ownership of the team and Art Rooney’s five sons who also have 80 percent ownership, they had to look into restructuring it. Dan Rooney the current Steelers Chairman and his son Art Rooney II who is the President of the franchise said they wanted to stay involved with the Steelers and ownership. However, Timothy and Patrick, the other two brothers decided to take on their racetrack business. They own two racetracks in Florida and New York and they now have video slot machines which is against NFL policy.
The NFL owners finally made a decision on restructuring the ownership on December 17, 2008, Dan and Art II ended up getting 30 percent of the stake. The Pittsburg Steelers colors are gold, black, and white. The quarterbacks are Charlie Batch and Dennis Dixon.
