Anyone who is a fan of some old but great country style music, Willie Nelson is the guy to listen to. Willie was born on April 30, 1933, as he grew older he realized he was really into music and songwriting. He quickly became known as an American country singer and songwriter, author, poet, actor, and activist. His peak was during the outlaw country movement in the 1970’s but stayed with the times and kept growing as a singer/songwriter. Willie Nelson is now in his late seventies and he is still touring the country and performing in concerts. He also does fundraisers with big time musicians such as Bob Dylan and Dave Matthews. Along with all of that Willie Nelson also still records albums that feature reggae, blues, jazz, folk, and popular music.
The singer/songwriter was originally born in Abbott, Texas, his parents are Myrle Marie and Ira Doyle Nelson. His father was a mechanic and a pool hall owner. The one who first got Nelson interested in working with music was his grandmother Nancy Elizabeth Smothers who gave him mail order music lessons when he was six years old. When Willie Nelson turned seven he wrote his very first song and by the time he was nine he was playing in a local band. Nelson played the guitar and his sister played the piano, then he met a guy named Bud Fletcher who was a fiddler and two other siblings joined the band as well. When Willie Nelson started high school he took on a job at a radio station as the disc jockey. He had mini DJ stints with KHBR in Hillsboro, Texas and then KBOP in Pleasanton, Texas and all while he would sing in local bars. In 1951 Nelson graduated from high school when he then joined the Air Force, he was discharged from the Air Force within a short nine months due to back problems. After the discharge, Nelson attended Baylor University for a year studying agriculture in 1954. Then in 1956 he started his musical career in Vancouver, Washington by recording “Lumberjack” by Leon Payne. This single sold at an ok rate but was not good enough to make his career jump off on a good starting point so he continued to do some radio announcing along with singing in clubs. Nelson sold a song called “Family Bible” for one hundred dollars and it became a gospel classic by Claude Gray. In the year 1960 Willie Nelson moved to Nashville, Tennessee but he could not get a record label just yet, but he did get a publishing contract with Pamper Music.
Nelson joined in on Ray Price’s band and went on tour with him playing the bass guitar after he recorded Nelson’s song called “Night Life”. While Nelson was on tour with Ray Price and the Cherokee Cowboys, a lot of his songs became hits such as “Funny How Time Slips Away” sung by Billy Walker, “Hello Walls” sung by Faron Young, “Pretty Paper” sung by Roy Orbison, and his most famous called “Crazy” sung by Patsy Cline. Willie Nelson also took on an acting career starting in 1979 with The Electric Horseman. He continued with acting in Honeysuckle Rose, Thief, and Barbarosa in the early 1980’s. Willie Nelson has made several appearances in many television shows and big screen films such as Miami Vice, Nash Bridges, The Simpsons, Monk, Bones, Space Ghost Coast to Coast.
